What You Need to Know about Methamphetamine (Crystal Meth)

The Workshop

Widespread availability of methamphetamine (crystal meth) is creating challenges for police and correctional staff, as well as for outreach, health and social service providers across the province. This half day workshop will provide information about crystal meth - its impacts on the brain, body and behavior - as well as explore the relationship between drug use and mental health issues (with an emphasis on methamphetamine). Participants will be provided ideas for intervening effectively with those who are experiencing paranoia and psychotic symptoms as a result of its use. Considerations for those withdrawing from methamphetamine will also be discussed.

The Trainer
Kerry Manthenga holds a Masters in Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University. She is currently the Clinical Director of Community Services at Stonehenge Therapeutic Community. Kerry has been working in addictions and mental health, in both Canada and New Zealand, for 15 years. It was during her work in New Zealand, where crystal meth is the second most commonly used illicit substance, that Kerry developed her expertise in methamphetamine. Kerry has recently worked with the Wellington Guelph Drug Strategy to provide training to health care professionals on methamphetamine, its unique impacts on individuals and systems of care.
